At the battle of Falkirk, in 1298, each of the great lords there had this own harper. Plucking a bit harder will produce a louder sound. In keyboard instruments, the contact point along the string (whether this be hammer, tangent, or plectrum) is a choice made by the instrument designer. Brass wire strung harps continue in the Gaelic tradition. Many a Highland and Irish harper (clarsair) played at court in those days, especially when James IV sat on the throne, for he was possibly the last of Scotland's rulers to speak Gaelic. Each string sound is a different musical note. The fluorocarbon strings have a comfortable tactile feel and the medium-light tension makes this instrument responsive and 'bouncy.' I find it ideally suited for playing traditional Celtic music and Irish dance tunes - ornaments roll easily off the fingers and it's forgiving even when my technique is less than perfect. There's also a "build your own variations" version that prints each version on its own page so that you can choose which to include and what order in which to play them.

If you decide to use paint or permanent markers, do be very careful not mark the wood of your harp. Clement The "Gaelic Cross" is a 3 octave (37 string) instrument which provides a quasi horizontal and straight plucking line (that is where strings are crossing), almost at the eye level. These harps had a loud, full, rich, bell-like sound. These are either antique instruments, or intended for students. The harmolin is interesting for a couple of reasons, the first of which is its functionality. That those who are pure in heart shall see God, and that virtue is its own reward, may be considered as equivalent assertions.
