[32] Guatemalan author William Spindler 's article, “Magic realism: a typology”, [33] suggests that there are three kinds of magic realism, which however are by no means incompatible: European ‘metaphysical’ magic realism, with its sense of estrangement and the uncanny, exemplified by Kafka ’s fiction; ‘ontological’ magical realism, characterized by ‘matter-of-factness’ in relating ‘inexplicable’ events; and ‘anthropological’ magical realism, where a Native worldview is set side by side with the Western rational worldview. [34] Spindler’s typology of magic realism has been criticized as “an act of categorization which seeks to define Magic Realism as a culturally specific project, by identifying for his readers those (non-modern) societies where myth and magic persist and where Magic Realism might be expected to occur.

In high literature, these stories become exoticized, objectified, hence, magical realism. Realism had profound effects on fiction from places as far-flung as Russia and the Americas. The two hemispheres of the movie work against each other; the part of the movie that’s well done is kind of boring, while the more intriguing portion often seems thrown together on the fly. Ramona Ausubel’s story “Chest of Drawers” is another great example. Included in the exhibit were Ivan Albright, Clarence H Carter, Peter Blume, Philip Evergood, O Louis Guglielmi, Jared French, Paul Cadmus, Zsissly (Malvin Marr Albright), and Charles Rain. Magic realist literature tends to read at an intensified level. Reminds me of a scene in my YA (which isn’t written yet…it’s in my head!). Their labels are not interchangeable in any way, even while they share some similarities.
