For centuries, English remained in the shadow of Latin and Greek as a school subject and as a vehicle of learning. On the other hand, while it is useful to put a label on general concepts, I wish scholars used labels that were easier to remember. You start with the literal meaning, discern the implied meaning and unearth the symbolic meaning. To choose a discourse is to choose a position. While it’s important that you have something substantive to say, it’s also important how you present your ideas.

By establishing as the unit of propositional analysis a combination of two linguistic items, Onoma (`name', 'noun') and rhema (`verb', 'predicate') these philosophers laid the foundation for the doctrine of the parts of speech which later constituted the core of ancient grammar. Students will continue to apply earlier standards with greater complexity. Most 18c and 19c grammarians were prescriptive in their approach, presenting grammar as the art or science of correct speech and writing.
